Human rights groups say the Chinese government has progressively withdrawn the religious and other freedoms of the Uyghurs – a Muslim minority living primarily in Xinjiang Province, northwest China – culminating in an oppressive system of mass surveillance, incarceration, indoctrination and even forced sterilization.
