Elon Musk funded Xprize’s US $ 100 million prize pool for a competition that seeks solutions that “draw carbon dioxide directly from the atmosphere or oceans and permanently lock it away in an environmentally friendly way.”

Xprize will award up to 15 finalists $ 1 million each, and the top three finishers will win $ 10, 20 and 50 million, respectively. 25 scholarships worth $ 250,000 will also be given to students on the student team.

To qualify, solutions must be able to extract 1 tonne of CO2 per day and demonstrate scalability.
