Democratic vice-presidential candidate Kamala Harris announced Thursday that she will be suspending travel after two employees tested positive for coronavirus.
According to a statement from campaign manager Jen O’Malley Dillon, the Biden campaign learned late Wednesday that Harris’ communications director Liz Allen and an “unoccupied flight crew member” had infected the coronavirus. None of the subjects had any contact with Biden or Harris for 48 hours prior to the test.
O’Malley Dillon said the former attorney general would suspend their events “out of caution” until Sunday. Harris was supposed to be in North Carolina Thursday.
“After dating Senator Harris, both of them attended non-campaign personal events over the past week. According to our campaign’s strict health protocols, both people had to be tested before they could get back to work with the campaign due to these personal incidents, “O’Malley Dillon said in a statement to CNN. “These logs help protect the campaign, its employees, and anyone they might come into contact with. The importance of such protocols – which include pre-service testing, regular testing during personal work, post-release isolation, and masking and distancing while campaigning – has been reiterated. “
O’Malley Dillon said Harris her husband Doug Emhoff and Biden have tested negative multiple times since the two employees tested positive for coronavirus.
News of a possible coronavirus outbreak within the Biden campaign comes less than two weeks after President Trump and more than 18 people in his circle admitted they had contracted the virus since former senior adviser Hope Hicks began Had tested positive October.
Others who have been infected with the coronavirus in Trump’s circle are his campaign manager Bill Stepien; President of the Republican National Committee Ronna McDaniel; Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany and two of her deputies, Chad Gilmartin and Karoline Leavitt; Trump Advisor Kellyanne Conway; former Christian Jersey Governor Chris Christie; Sens. Mike Lee (R-Utah); Thom Tillis (RN.C.) and Ron Johnson (R-Wisc.); Nick Luna, the President’s personal assistant; and the first lady Melania and her son Barron.
Due to Trump’s COVID-19 infection, Trump and Biden will host competing town hall events instead of a second debate on Thursday night. Biden’s City Hall will be on ABC while NBC, MSNBC, and CNBC will host Trump’s City Hall.
NBC is already facing a backlash on Twitter for agreeing to host Trump’s City Hall. Elections have already started in several states due to early voting and the Democrats have a significant advantage, but this is unlikely to continue as election day approaches.
