Kashmir’s political events unite to combat for return of autonomy | India

The parties announce a grand alliance to peacefully restore the region’s autonomy after India released the last significant leader.

Kashmir’s main political parties have announced a grand alliance to peacefully restore their autonomy after India released Kashmir’s last major political leader from prolonged detention.

“Our struggle is a constitutional struggle. We want the Indian government to return to the people of the state [of Kashmir] the rights they had before August 5, 2019, ”Farooq Abdullah, former prime minister of Indian-administered Kashmir, said Thursday.

Abdullah spoke to reporters after a meeting of the main parties of the disputed region – the National Conference, the People’s Democratic Party, the People’s Conference, the National Awami Conference and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) – held at his residence in the main city of Srinagar .

On Tuesday, the government ordered the release of another former Prime Minister, Mehbooba Mufti, after serving 14 months in prison. She and other heads of state and government immediately called for a campaign to restore the privileges of Indian-administered Kashmir.

The government of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year revoked the special status of the Muslim-majority region, took action against the opposition and rounded up hundreds of people to forestall protests.

The Modi government said at the time that the end of the special status of Kashmir was necessary for closer integration of the Himalayan mountain range with the rest of India.

After the New Delhi government revoked Kashmiri autonomy, it imposed a communications outage that cut cell phones, internet connections and landlines as part of its policy.

Abdullah and his son Omar Abdullah, also a former prime minister, were released by authorities earlier this year.
