The director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Dr. Robert Redfield, on Saturday night, gave formal approval for Pfizer-BioNTech’s coronavirus vaccine to be given to people aged 16 and over, the agency said on Sunday.
Its official confirmation came after the emergency clearance issued by the Food and Drug Administration on Friday. Frontline health workers could start the first dose of the two-shot vaccine as early as Monday morning in cities across the country.
Due to a processing error, an earlier version of this item incorrectly stated that the CDC’s action on Saturday extended the age range of authorized recipients beyond the FD.A. had authorized to include 16 and 17 year olds. In fact, FDA approval included them too.
The signature by Dr. Redfield is one of the final nods to the US government for Pfizer BioNTech vaccine, first available in the UK, Canada and now the US.
