European Union presents initiative to strengthen LGBTQ rights

The European Commission announced it would strengthen the rights of LGBTQ people in response to a wave of discrimination against LGBTQ people, particularly by right-wing governments in Hungary and Poland.

“Too many people cannot be themselves without fear of discrimination, marginalization or violence. This is a worrying trend in Europe for incidents such as attacks on pride marches and the adoption of so-called LGBTIQ declarations without ideology-free zones. We know that the situation may have worsened during the Covid-19 lockdowns because many young LGBTIQ people are locked up in hostile environments where they are at risk of violence or increased risk of anxiety or depression. “The very first LGBTIQ strategy outlines the Commission’s key actions and objectives for the next five years, based on four pillars: combating discrimination against LGBTIQ people, ensuring the safety of LGBTIQ people, building LGBTIQ inclusive societies and worldwide Demand for LGBTIQ equality. We will present an initiative to expand the list of EU crimes in Article 83 of the Treaty to cover hate crimes and hate speech, including those directed against LGBTIQ people. ““ This is about Europe in the 21st century. It’s 2020 and hatred and discrimination against people from sexual minorities really don’t belong in Europe these days. “
