Landslide in Quang Tri Province comes days after another landslide killed 13, mostly soldiers, in the neighboring region.
At least 22 soldiers were missing in a landslide early Sunday in Vietnam’s central Quang Tri province, the government said as the Southeast Asian country battled the worst flooding in years.
Heavy rains since the beginning of October have resulted in floods and mudslides, killing at least 64 people in central Vietnam. Heavier rains are expected in the next few days.
The landslide hit the barracks of a unit of Vietnam’s 4th Military Region, the government said in a statement on its website, days after another landslide killed 13 people, mostly soldiers, in neighboring Thua Thien Hue province.
“We had another sleepless night,” a visibly emotional Vietnamese defense minister, Phan Van Giang, told reporters on Sunday.
According to state media reports, water in rivers in Quang Tri province rose to its highest level in more than 20 years on Sunday.
In Thua Thien Hue province, rescuers continued to fight driving rain as they searched for at least 15 construction workers who were missing and feared dead after a landslide in a mountain area earlier this week.
Heavy rain of up to 600 millimeters (24 inches) will continue in parts of central Vietnam until Wednesday, the Vietnamese weather agency announced on Sunday.
