According to the UN, the Libyan ceasefire agreement is “fundamental” to ending conflicts
United Nations Secretary General António Guterres on Friday welcomed the permanent ceasefire agreement between the two main warring parties in Libya, saying it was a “fundamental step” in ending the conflict.
I welcome the signing of a ceasefire agreement by the Libyan parties today in Geneva under the auspices of the United Nations. This is a fundamental step towards peace and stability in Libya. I congratulate the parties for putting their nation’s interests before their differences. I appeal to all those involved and regional actors to comply with the provisions of the ceasefire agreement and to ensure that it is implemented without delay. And I call on the international community to help the Libyans implement the ceasefire and then end the conflict. There is no military solution to the conflict in Libya. The ceasefire agreement is a critical step, but there is still a lot of hard work ahead of us. The United Nations will continue to support the Libyan parties in their search for lasting peace in their country. But I would also like to emphasize in connection with my repeated calls for a global ceasefire so that we can concentrate all our efforts on the Covid-19 pandemic. With the inspiration of the Libyan Agreement, it is now time to mobilize all efforts in support of the mediation process to end the conflicts in Yemen, Afghanistan, as well as Armenia and Azerbaijan, where active hostilities are causing immense suffering to civilians.
