The current leader, Igor Dodon, is openly backed by Moscow, which accuses the United States of plotting a revolution in Moldova in order to oust him. His challenger, Maia Sandu, advocates closer relations with the EU – and critics paint her as a puppet of the West who would allegedly introduce foreign liberal values and enable a NATO base in the country.
