Efforts to recall contested California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) passed a critical hurdle on Wednesday after the deadline expired with over half a million more signatures than required (2.1 million total). But instead of reporting that blow to the hypocritical-liberal governor, ABC’s World News Tonight was busy advising that everything was fine in California by being corporate whores and announcing the reopening of Disneyland next month.
“With vaccinations increasing rapidly across the country, Disney boss Bob Chapek announced today that Disneyland, California will reopen at the end of next month. ABC’s parent company park, ”boasted Good Morning America correspondent and co-host Eva Pilgrim.
But while she crowed about how amazing the Disneyland reopening was, she was deciphering other states as well for allowing smaller businesses to do the same. “Although the national case average is falling, 15 states have seen a rise of at least 10 percent from the Midwest to the northeast in the past week. But half the country is now easing restrictions. Minnesota is starting its rollback“She wailed.
In stark contrast, Fox News Channel’s special report devoted a full report to documenting Newsom’s problems. “After 26 months as governor, Gavin Newsom is preparing for an election that could throw him out of office,” reported correspondent William La Jeunesse. “Newsom’s recall campaign received more than 2 million signatures today, enough to trigger a special election.”
La Jeunesse also poked a massive hole in the governor’s efforts to smear those who signed the petition to remove him from office:
LA JEUNESSE: Newsom portrays its opponents as Trump-loving extremists and calls their efforts a “Republican recall”.
NEWSOM: This is a sideline – this is a circus that is going to cost $ 100 plus million.
LA JEUNESSE: Opponents say Newsom is out of touch, a third of petition signatures come from Democrats or Independents.
“The recall faces a number of bureaucratic hurdles before the vote takes place. If it survives, voters have two options, ”added La Jeunesse. “Number one, up or down at Newsom and a second vote with him was the placement. There have been three Republicans so far, but most predict there will be many more to come. “
While ABC simply continued the blackout of the Newsom recall on its flagship newscasts, CBS Evening News and NBC Nightly News seemed to think it was enough to touch him that morning.
How NewsBusters reports Wednesday morning NBC’s Today spent just 25 seconds on the story, and CBS This Morning feared Republicans would “hijack” the effort (it was unclear how this coincided with Newsom’s framing). “Are there any concerns that this recall is being hijacked just to get a Republican into office in a fairly democratic state?“CBS correspondent Carter Evans asked a recall organizer.
Interestingly, Evans also touted Disneyland’s reopening after deciphering other states to ease restrictions during the CBS Evening News. “And a lot of good news tonight in California: After more than a year of downtime, Disneyland will reopen on April 30th at 15 percent capacity.”
