Written by Burgess, Modern Austen is an hour-long anthology series that reinterprets Austen’s beloved novels as six modern stories and offers a kaleidoscopic look at love and family in our age of inequality and separation. Each season is a different novel, starting with Pride and Prejudice, set in contemporary San Francisco.

Burgess Executive is producing with Allain from Homegrown Pictures. Gabrielle Ebron, Creative Executive at Homegrown Pictures, is the producer. Warner Bros. TV is the studio.

Burgess is the author of the HBO reboot of Perry Mason, which has been renewed for a second season.

Allain co-produced the 2020 Academy Awards with Lynette Howell Taylor and made history as the first black woman in the academy’s 92-year history. Allain founded Homegrown Pictures in 2003 under female management, a company that produces content by and about women and people with color. Since then, she has produced award-winning titles including Hustle & Flow, Something New, Peeples, Beyond The Lights, Dear White People, French Dirty, Burning Sands, Juanita and The Weekend. In total, Homegrown Pictures projects have been nominated for over 100 awards and have received numerous prizes from the Academy, the Film Independent Spirit, the Sundance Film Festival and the NAACP Image Awards.
