As COVID-19 cases continue to rise in the US, states are beginning to put in place new rules to keep citizens safe and to reduce the increasing number of cases. Last week, Chicago Mayoress Lori Lightfoot announced that she would be issuing mandatory home stays and assembly restrictions for her city. California Governor Gavin Newsom held a live press conference today and tweeted that he had ordered a curfew in 41 of the state’s 58 counties. These counties, which are considered the “purple tier,” comprised more than 94 percent of the state’s population.
The “Purple Tier” refers to the California color-coded system based on the number of coronavirus cases in each county. Purple or Tier 1 is the highest and hardest level. According to ABC News 7, the virus has spread across the county, with more than seven cases per 100,000 residents.
The limited “Stay at Home Order” is not a complete block compared to the previous months. Orders start this Saturday from 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. All non-essential work, movements, and gatherings must cease in all purple wards. Governor Newsome received a backlash earlier this month after he was spotted at a large dinner party amid coronavirus safety protocols at a Napa Valley restaurant. What added more fuel to the fire was that he was captured without a mask.
He apologized for not setting a better example. With immediate effect, the curfew is to remain in place until December 21 at 5 a.m. Many people said this was a much needed action as it got out of hand with social activities.
