Gerry And The Pacemakers singer Gerry Marsden, best known in the US for his 1960s hit Ferry Cross The Mersey, has died at the age of 78.

Friend and broadcaster Pete Price confirmed his death, saying Marsden had heart disease.

“It is with a very heavy heart, after speaking to the family, that I have to tell you that the legendary Gerry Marsden MBE sadly passed away after a brief illness that was an infection in his heart.”
