EXCLUSIVE: Rome-based distribution company TVCO has incorporated into world rights the rights of Masha, Anastasia Palchikova’s Russian drama, which will be screened at Tallinn Black Nights in Estonia and will debut at AFM this month.

The film is a co-production between Moscow-based companies 1-2-3 Production, the makers of the Netflix original series To The Lake, and Mars Media, which includes T-34 and Arrythmia, among others.

Masha premiered at Kinotavr, the Sochi Open Russian Film Festival, and received the Best Debut Film Award there. The film plays Anna Chipovskaya (The Road to Golgotha) as a girl who grew up in the turbulent 1990s between the boxing ring and the streets of the provincial Russian city.

Her closest friends are young gangsters who kill, rob, steal and are loathed by the whole city. But in the eyes of young girls, they are the salt of the earth, the family that they love and protect. Mascha discovers a taste for jazz and dreams of becoming a singer. Ultimately, she realizes who the men around her really are and what they have done to their family.

“At our first meeting with 1-2-3 Production at the Venice Production Bridge, we were intrigued by both the market potential and artistic value of this film, and we look forward to being connected as a global distributor from AFM 2020,” said Vincenzo Mosca, CEO of TVCO.

“Mascha has the full potential to find its place in the world market and to shine with the right approach and the right guidance: we have found the perfect supervisor in TVCO,” added Nadiia Zaionchkovska, sales and coproduction manager of 1-2-3 Production, added.

“In recent years, more Russian content of various genres has received more attention from viewers and international distributors, and we are very proud of it. The main reason is that Russian producers tell universal stories on a world-class quality level. Masha is such a film. It falls into the genre of criminal drama and tells a universal story of growing up in difficult circumstances, ”added Evgenia Markova, CEO of Roskino advertising agency.
