Wisconsin’s two largest counties have completed the recounts requested by the Trump campaign. The results have slightly increased Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s profit margin and confirmed his victory over President Trump in this month’s election.
Dane County confirmed its election results on Sunday and Milwaukee County confirmed its total on Friday. The Wisconsin Elections Commission is due to meet on Tuesday.
The completion of the recount adds another loss in the Trump campaign’s efforts to improve Mr Biden’s victory. The president’s team has suffered a number of court losses in several key states including Pennsylvania and Michigan.
As Mr Trump continued to make unsubstantiated claims of election fraud in Wisconsin and across the country, his campaign called for recounts in two heavily Democratic counties. But it had little impact on the bottom line.
In Milwaukee County, Mr. Biden’s ticket received 317,527 votes. Mr. Trump’s ticket got 134,482 according to county results. Both sums increased slightly compared to an earlier census and Mr Biden received 132 votes.
Dane County, which includes the city of Madison and the University of Wisconsin flagship campus, found 260,094 votes were cast for Mr. Biden while 78,754 votes were cast for Mr. Trump. Compared to previous results, the final settlement had 91 fewer ballots for Mr Biden and 46 fewer for Mr Trump – a net profit of 45 for Mr Trump.
Before the recounts were announced, Mr Trump signaled that he would continue to fight the results. “The recount in Wisconsin is not about finding errors in the count, it is about finding people who voted illegally. This case will be brought on Monday or Tuesday after the recount is complete,” he wrote on Twitter on Saturday . “We found a lot of illegal voices. Stay tuned!”
The Wisconsin Elections Commission has estimated that a statewide recount would cost $ 7.9 million. Milwaukee County estimated its recount would cost about $ 2 million, and Dane County estimated about $ 740,808. According to state law, Mr Trump’s team is expected to pay the bill as the margin between candidates exceeded 0.25 percent.
Both Milwaukee County and Dane County broadcast their recounts live. Mr Trump has insisted his campaign observers were unable to observe the vote count, a claim that is controversial.
