Tony-Nominated Actor And Movie, TV Star Was 77 – .

Anthony Chisholm, whose long career included Broadway, film, and television, died today at the age of 77. The Katz Company, its talent management company, gave no reason.

Chisholm received a Tony nomination for Best Actor in One Play in 2007 for his role in August Wilson’s other play, Radio Golf.

Born on April 9, 1943 in Cleveland, Ohio, he was drafted into the US Army in the 1960s as platoon leader for the 4th Armored Calvary of the 1st Infantry Division in the Vietnam War.

After returning to the United States, Chisholm appeared in The Boys from Syracuse and The Threepenny Opera at Karamu House in Cleveland, Ohio.

He made his film debut in 1968 in Uptight, directed by Jules Dassin. This began a career in which he could be seen in films such as Putney Swope in 1969 and Cotton Comes to Harlem in 1970

In 1987, Chisholm’s Vietnam War experiences were the inspiration for the HBO television series Vietnam War Story.

Chisholm met August WIlson while auditioning for Two Trains Running in 1990 and won the role of Wolf. The meeting resulted in a fruitful collaboration between Chisholm and Wilson, with Chisholm being part of the touring company of production before reaching Broadway in 1992. In 1996, he became part of the core cast of Wilsons Jitney, who performed off Broadway in New York City in 2000.

In the early minds, Chisholm was prisoner Burr Redding on the HBO crime series Oz before returning to the stage in 2004 with Wilson’s Gem of the Ocean. In 2007, Chisholm portrayed Elder Joseph Barlow in Wilson’s Pittsburgh Cycle and received a Tony Award nomination for his portrayal.

Chisholm received the NAACP Theater Award, the AUDELCO Award, the Ovation Award and the IRNE Award. He also received nominations for the Drama Desk, Drama League, NAACP Theater Award, and AUDELCO Awards

The survivors include his son Alexander Chisholm, his daughter Che Chisholm, his son-in-law Peter Vietro-Hannum and the grandsons Ravi & Avani Vietro.
