TSR Updatez: Inspector-Normal of Police, Mohammed Adamu, Proclaims New SWAT Unit To Substitute SARS—Nigerians Specific Rejection Of Thought On Social Media

On Tuesday, the Inspector General of the Police, Mohammed Adamu, stated that all employees of the now defunct SARS (Special Anti-Robbery Squad) are obliged to report to the Force Headquarters in Abuja for a debriefing, psychological and medical examination, according to the Sahara reporter.

Frank Mba, spokesman for the armed forces, said in a statement Tuesday that officers would be trained and realigned before being “returned to general police operations”.

The statement states: “The Inspector General of the Police, MA Adamu, ordered all employees of the defunct SARS today, October 13, 2020, in accordance with Section 18 (10) of the Police Act 2020, to report to the headquarters of the armed forces, Abuja, for debriefing, psychological and medical examination. The officers are expected to go through this process as a prelude to training and reorientation before being reassigned to general police operations. “

The statement also made reference to the counseling of officials and psychological management.

“The medical examination will be carried out by the newly established police advisory and support unit, which will in future be responsible for psychological management, reorientation and training of officers of the armed forces who will be used for tactical operations and other tasks. The unit, based in the Force Medical division and coordinated by the Force Medical Officer, is comprised of psychiatrists, psychologists, medical professionals, pastors and imams, public relations practitioners, civil society and other human rights groups with relevant qualifications. “

While the former members of SARS are receiving medical and psychological assistance, the IGP has set up a new team for special weapons and tactics.

“In the meantime, the IGP has set up a new special weapons and tactics team that will fill the gaps resulting from the resolution of the defunct SARS,” the statement also said.

The President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, tweeted: “All officers and men of the now disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) are to be reinstated with immediate effect.” He continued, “A new police deal is to fill the expected policing loopholes caused by the dissolution of SARS and is being announced by @PoliceNG.”

While the authorities are developing a new system, many people in the community do not believe in SWAT. A Twitter user wrote: “SWAT is dead on arrival. #EndSWAT #EndSARSnow #EndPoliceBrutalityInNigeria #EndNorthBanditry”

Another wrote: “If crime increases, it is because of increasing poverty (not even now that we honestly no longer know the difference between criminals and law enforcement agencies).
Therefore we have to #EndSWAT #EndPoliceBrutalityinNigeria #EndBadGovernanceinNIGERIA ”
