California Governor Indicators New Legislation Of Safety Requiring State Prisons To Home Transgender Inmates Primarily based On How They Determine

Roommate, California Governor Gavin Newsom, has just signed a package of measures to strengthen protection for LGBTQ inmates. The latest includes one that requires the state penal system to accommodate transgender, gender-assaulting, and intersex people based on their gender identity.

The new law, titled SB 132, also requires the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) to interview and record a transgender inmate’s self-reported gender identity, gender pronoun, and title throughout their tenure at the facility. This emerges from a press release from the governor’s office.

Currently, California prisons are segregated by gender, and proponents say prisons are especially dangerous for anyone who doesn’t fit stereotypical gender roles. Governor Newsom also signed Law SB 932, which provides health authorities with more information about patients who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender. The bill is part of a push to eradicate health inequalities in the LGBTQ community due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

In addition, Newsom signed into law to create a Transgender Wellness and Equity Fund that “supports organizations that serve people who identify as transgender, gender, or intersex (TGI) and the creation or funding of TGI-specific housing programs and partnerships with Hospitals and healthcare supported nursing clinics and other medical providers offer TGI-focused healthcare, “said the governor’s office.

In a statement accompanying the decision, Governor Newson had the following to say:

“California has some of the strongest pro-LGBTQ + laws in the nation, and with the bills signed today, our march toward equality is another step forward. These new laws will help us better understand the impact of COVID-19 on the LGBTQ + community, establish a new fund to support our transgender sisters and brothers, and advance inclusive and culturally literate efforts that uphold the dignity of all Californians , regardless of who you are or who you love. “

The new law follows a law passed by Connecticut in 2018 that gave inmates the right to be placed in a facility that matches their gender identity.
