CNN in Love: Bash Buys Cori Bush’s Savior Shtick

Fresh from her comments to CBSN on the need for private security when she called for the police to defuse to leave her constituents unprotected from violent criminals, Squad member and Congresswoman Cori Bush (D-MO) became like a conquering Sunday morning on CNN’s State Heroine greets the Union as co-hostess Dana Bush bought into Bush’s savior shtick.

Bash teased the segment, saying they were on their most recent sit-in on the Capitol steps Bush has thrown “millions of fighting Americans to a potential lifeline”. And Bash praised Bush for “forcing action”.

The CNN host was exuberant in her praise as she began her questioning of Bush by throwing, if not a lifeline, then it a super slow softball that asks what your kids think of their advocacy (click on “expand”):

For them, it’s personal. This week, Democratic Congresswoman Cori Bush, who once lived in a car with her two children, slept on the steps of the Capitol for days and nights, urging Congress and the President to save millions of Americans from displacement. And it enforced something that you don’t see often here in Washington: action.

She’s coming to me now live from St. Louis. Thank you Congressmen for joining me. You have talked a lot over the past week about how personal this struggle was for you to be displaced three times yourself, even while you were raising two young children. And I’m going to ask you some details of what happened. But before, I can’t help but wonder, given that you raised these children now they are all adults, what do you think of your efforts?

Bash was also very sympathetic to Bush’s defense of spending a lot of money on personal safety while calling for the police to be relieved and saying they wanted “emphasize“That she knew Bush had received death threats.

And when she picked up on something Bush had said, Bash asked if defending her personal safety for herself was a communication problem while calling for the police to be disempowered.

But what about the countless people across America whose lives are also threatened by criminals? Bash never pushed Bush on the double standard hypocrisy of her position: protection for me, but not for you.

By disempowering the police, the “work” Bush liked to talk about would not save lives – it would cost them!

DANA BASH: A sit-in on the steps of the Capitol caught the President’s attention and throws a potential lifeline to millions of fighting Americans. How did Congressman Cori Bush get the White House to act? She joins me next.

(….)

BASH: Welcome back to State of the Union.

You have talked a lot in the past week about how personal this struggle was for you to be displaced three times yourself, even while you were raising two young children. And I’m going to ask you some details of what happened. But before, I can’t help but wonder, given that you raised these children now they are all adults, what do you think of your efforts?

CORI BUSH: For her, that’s what mom does. Mama, you know, Mama fights for everyone. And they saw me, whether I slept on the street to help out in my own community, or – to raise awareness of what is happening to our unhodged community members, or to fight for justice for Michael Brown, you know? , whose – who, tomorrow is the day of his death.

And that’s how my children saw it again and again. and they stand with me. You know they got radicalized also. So you want to see your mother, you know, you know her.

BASH: Congressman, I want to ask you about the criticism you received about your comments in an interview last week. I want our viewers to listen.

BUSH [on CBSN, 08/03/21]: I will keep things safe because I know my life has been attacked. and I have much to do. There are too many people who need help now so that I let that happen. So if I end up spending $ 200,000, if I spend $ 10 more on it, you know what? I can be here do the work. So, soak it up. And the defusion of the police has to happen. We have to expose the police.

BASH: I know you saw the Republicans point out that you said you had your own safety. But almost in the same breath he pleads for the disempowerment of the police. Now, I want to emphasize, According to her, you have security protection because you have received multiple death threats. But the clip I just played isn’t used against you in attack ads – not just against you, but against other Democrats. So could these comments be politically harmful to your Democrats?

BUSH: I think we have to look at the fact that I made it into Congress – in 2020. I was elected to Congress. And we’re still fighting this same fight. We are still fighting to save black lives. That was not — this work wasn’t done before I was here. This is why I ran to save life, to save my son’s life. It was because Michael Brown, whom we are fighting for, is still trying to get justice. It’s because he didn’t get fair, and Vonderrit Myers didn’t get fair, and Kajieme Powell didn’t get fair and so many others.

Therefore. And because it wasn’t like that – that wasn’t fixed before i was hereonly to come to me and say that you are the cause of these problems. No, the reason we have these problems is because those who were in power and could have fixed this problem sooner didn’t and it cost their lives.

BUSH: Like my colleagues, you know I can absolutely empathize. I have compassion But, you know what? The same thing the Republicans would do, namely Find out how to work with it on a communication basis, we have to do that. My job is to save lives. Life in my community.

(….)

BASH: And I hear what you say, but I also heard You say you think it’s a communication problem. Is that it? Because —

BUSH: No. I say we can do that too – that’s another way of approaching this. You have to approach it from more than one place. We have to work on what we want to say. What is our message But then we also have to understand whether we also need to save lives.
