Nearly three dozen House Democrats called on Biden on Monday to relinquish his sole power to launch nuclear weapons in order to reform the command and control structure so that no single person can start a nuclear war.
“… There are real risks in delegating any person with this authority,” said the letter from Rep. Jimmy Panetta of California. “Former presidents have threatened to attack other countries with nuclear weapons or behaved in a way that led other officials to express concern about the president’s judgment.”
“While any president would likely consult with advisers before ordering a nuclear attack, it is not necessary,” the letter added. “The military is required to carry out the order if it is found legal under the laws of war. Given the current attitude of the US nuclear forces, this attack would take place in a few minutes. “
