Good or bad, Savannah Guthrie, co-host of the Today Show, turned heads in October when she competed against President Donald Trump during NBC City Hall.
During the television show, which notoriously aired on ABC at the same time as Joe Biden’s City Hall, Guthrie turned City Hall into an interview with the President and asked him questions about his COVID-19 strategy, tweets, and more. However, when the moderator spoke to Trump about his social media posts, he made a comment that now surprises her.
“You’re not like someone’s crazy uncle and you can just retweet anything,” Guthrie said in October after Trump noticed that he wasn’t creating the conspiracy theories about Biden himself, but rather sharing them through Twitter’s “retweet” function.
Guthrie pondered the comment in an interview with the New York Times published on Saturday.
“I am shocked at myself. I don’t even know if it’s a good thing I said it, ”she said. “That just came out.”
Her interview with Trump sparked a number of mixed reactions, including excitement and disappointment. After the town hall finished, Fox News’ Sean Hannity said “fake NBC News did their best to ambush the president,” adding that Trump was “pretty much debating” Savannah Guthrie.
In the Times article, Guthrie explained her sense of duty when it comes to speaking to high-profile figures like Trump, President-elect Biden, and Hillary Clinton.
“Believe it or not, I don’t like confrontation,” Guthrie told the Times. “In fact, I would like to avoid it. But I don’t like talking about points either. I think the audience expects us to ask the questions. “
